FBI Cautions Crypto Investors: North Korean Hackers Might Dump $40M in Bitcoin

FBI Warns Crypto Investors of Impending North Korean Hacker Bitcoin Sale.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a cautionary notice to cryptocurrency investors, alerting them to the potential actions of North Korean hackers who intend to sell stolen Bitcoin (BTC) worth tens of millions of dollars on the market.

In an official press release, the enforcement agency disclosed that it has successfully identified wallet addresses linked to the North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor or Lazarus. The FBI strongly advises investors to remain vigilant, as these hackers could potentially liquidate around $40 million worth of BTC.

The FBI’s investigation reveals that the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) TraderTraitor-affiliated actors, including Lazarus Group and APT38, have engaged in recent blockchain activities connected to the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. Within the past 24 hours, these actors have transferred approximately 1,580 Bitcoin from various cryptocurrency heists and currently possess these funds in the following Bitcoin addresses:

The FBI highlights that these North Korean hackers were responsible for several high-profile cryptocurrency heists in June, including the theft of $60 million from AlphaPo, a crypto payments provider, $37 million from CoinsPaid, a crypto wallet provider, and $100 million from Atomic Wallet, another crypto wallet provider.

Furthermore, the group has targeted other entities in the crypto sphere, such as Harmony’s (ONE) Horizon bridge and Sky Mavis’ Ronin bridge (RON), as detailed in the press release.

The Bureau advises investors to be cautious of any involvement with these hackers’ associated addresses and to refrain from conducting transactions directly with or from these addresses. The FBI remains committed to uncovering and countering the DPRK’s utilization of illicit activities, including cybercrime and virtual currency theft, as part of their revenue generation strategies for the regime.
